Welcome to IPTA
The Illinois Public Transportation Association is an organization dedicated to achieving the best public transportation service possible. We continue to accomplish this through: advocating the value of public transportation; representing the legislative, regulatory and administrative interests of members; and providing a forum for the exchange of information, ideas, and experience.

The State of Illinois is severely delayed in making payments to transit systems.  Downstate Transit is owed nearly $160 million in statutorily required transfers, threatening service across the state.  56 urban and rural public transportation systems downstate receive operating assistance through the Downstate Public Transportation Fund, which is funding derived by a portion of the state sales taxes collected in the service areas of each public transportation system. Downstate public transportation systems provided a combined total of more than 41.5 million rides in FY16.

  • Contact your local legislators today, and tell them how critical that transit agencies get paid immediately.
  • Contact Comptroller Mendoza's office, and urge her to make the transfers to the Downstate Public Transportation Fund as required by law.
  • Contact Governor Rauner and encourage he and lawmakers to come to a full and balanced budget resolution.
